Acid Leaching

Coconut shell powder can be directly leached with a dilute sulfuric acid solution to extract copper ions into the liquid. The acid dissolves the copper which can then be recovered by precipitation or electrolysis.

Up to 80% of the copper in coconut shell powder has been extracted using a 1M sulfuric acid solution.

Ammonia Leaching

This method involves using aqueous ammonia to extract copper from the coconut shell. The ammonia forms complexes with copper ions, leading to dissolution of the copper. The liquid can then be processed to recover the copper.

Ammonia leaching is able to extract over 75% of the copper from coconut shell biochar. It is more environmentally friendly than acid leaching.

Supercritical Fluid Extraction

A supercritical fluid like CO2 under high pressure and temperature can effectively extract copper from coconut shell powder. The copper selectively dissolves into the fluid which is then decompressed to separate the copper.

This method recovers 60-99% of the copper with the advantage of using no solvents. However, the high pressure and temperature requires more complex equipment.

Processing the Extract

Once the copper has been extracted into a liquid solution, several techniques can be used to recover the solid copper:

Electrowinning

The copper-bearing solution is electrolyzed to deposit pure copper metal onto the cathode while the copper ions are reduced.

Chemical Precipitation

Chemicals like iron or sodium hydroxide are added to precipitate the copper out of solution as copper hydroxide or copper oxide. These compounds can then be reduced to metallic copper.

Adsorption

The liquid is treated with adsorbents like activated carbon or biomass which adsorb the copper ions. The copper adsorbed on the surface is then recovered.

Solvent Extraction

An organic solvent that selectively extracts copper from the solution can recover the copper. The copper is stripped from the organic phase back into an aqueous phase from which the copper can be recovered.
