What is light in the word of God?

Light is a prevalent theme throughout the Bible. Scripture often uses light as a metaphor for God’s truth, wisdom, revelation, and presence. Understanding the biblical meanings and symbolism of light deepens our comprehension of God’s nature and His interactions with humanity.

Light Represents God’s Truth

The Bible frequently uses light as a symbol for God’s truth and righteousness. Psalms 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” God’s Word illuminates the right way to live. Similarly, Psalms 119:130 states, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” God’s precepts impart wisdom and knowledge to those seeking truth.

Proverbs 6:23 advises, “For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life.” Obeying God’s moral law gives light and leads to an abundant life. In contrast, evil deeds belong to darkness. Ephesians 5:8 instructs believers to “Live as children of light,” reflecting the Lord’s virtue.

Jesus embodied the light of God’s truth, declaring, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Through His teachings and exemplary life, Christ lights the path to salvation.

Light Symbolizes God’s Wisdom and Revelation

Supernatural light often accompanies divine revelations in Scripture. When the prophet Samuel was seeking God’s anointed king, the Lord said, “I will send you a man…tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me” (1 Samuel 9:16). The next day, “Samuel took a flask of olive oil and went to meet Saul”. As Saul approached, “the Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person” (1 Samuel 10:1,6). When the Spirit rushed upon Saul, divine light flooded him and he began prophesying. This marked his anointing as king of Israel.

Similarly, when the resurrected Christ appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus, “suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him” (Acts 9:3). Jesus revealed Himself to Paul in a blaze of blinding light, commissioned him as an apostle, and began unveiling the gospel message to him. The bright radiance represented the illumination of divine truth flooding Paul’s mind.

During Christ’s transfiguration, “his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew 17:2). Jesus temporarily peeled back His humanity to unveil His divine glory, flooding the mountain with brilliant light. This foreshadowed His resurrection and heavenly reign.

Light Signifies God’s Presence

The Bible commonly uses light to symbolize God’s presence. Psalm 104:2 poetically depicts God as wrapped in light, declaring “The LORD wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent”. Similarly, 1 Timothy 6:16 describes God as “dwelling in unapproachable light”. Light emanates from God’s being.

When Moses met God on Mount Sinai, “The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain” (Exodus 24:16-18). The blazing cloud visibly manifested God’s glory and presence.

During the Exodus, the Lord guided Israel across the desert in a pillar of fiery cloud by night and cloudy pillar by day. “By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light” (Exodus 13:21). This luminous cloud represented God’s continual presence leading and protecting His people.

When Moses finished constructing the desert tabernacle, “the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle” (Exodus 40:34-35). The dazzling cloud visibly filled the tabernacle, marking God’s glory inhabiting it.

Light Permeates God’s Heavenly City

Heaven’s brilliant luminosity reflects God’s perfect holiness. Revelation 21:23 describes the celestial New Jerusalem: “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Divine radiance emanates from God and Christ, illuminating all of heaven. Verse 24 adds, “The nations will walk by its light”. Heaven’s illuminating glory enables its inhabitants to worship the Lord and serve Him perfectly.

Light Shines in Darkness

Scripture depicts light piercing through darkness. Isaiah 9:2 promises messianic hope to those walking in darkness, declaring “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, bringing salvation’s light into a spiritually darkened world.

John 1:5 announces, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Though sin runs rampant, Christ’s light continues spreading through believers, underscoring darkness will not prevail.

As Christians, we now “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7). God has “called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9). Just as light vanquishes gloom, so Christ’s truth enlightens and transforms.

Believers Reflect Christ’s Light

Followers of Jesus reflect His illuminating truth. Matthew 5:14-16 exhorts believers: “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” As “children of light” (Ephesians 5:8), Christians shine the hope of Christ in a darkened world.

Our lives should be filled with “the fruit of light” by displaying “goodness, righteousness and truth” (Ephesians 5:9). When the light of Christ permeates our hearts, it radiates outward through righteous living and kindness.

As Philippians 2:15 urges, believers must “shine as lights in the world” by modeling integrity. When the light of Christ fills our inner being, it can’t help but beam outward, driving back deception and moral decay in society.

One day, God’s illumination will flood all of creation. Revelation 22:5 declares that in heaven, “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.” Until then, may we reflect God’s light everywhere we go.

Conclusion

Throughout Scripture, the recurring motif of light deepens our understanding of God’s nature and His plan to redeem humanity. Light represents God’s truth, wisdom, revelation, presence, and glory. As Christians, we walk in the light of Christ’s gospel which pierces the darkness of sin. We are now called to let our light shine brightly before others so they may come to glorify our Father in heaven. Light will one day permeate all creation when God’s luminous presence fills the New Heavens and New Earth.
